A flame about flames…

This last week in my adopted home-state of Victoria has seen vicious fires rip through the areas to the north, northeast and northwest of Melbourne. Entire towns (such as Marysville and Kinglake) have been all but destroyed, leaving little more than a hotel and several houses – and even those are certainly not unscathed. Thousands of people have been left homeless, over a hundred have been killed with and many more are missing, expected dead.

holiday snaps pt 1 – War Memorial

Ok, so it says part one, but don’t be fooled: there will be future posts that happened before this. Basically I’m just uploading and posting as I get around to editing the photos and cutting out the dodgier ones. I should probably try to cut them down even more, but there’s just so many I can’t NOT upload. Anyway, here goes…

These photos were taken this week when I took my little brothers Mateo, Daniel and Lucas to the Australian National War Memorial in Canberra. I have to admit that I had slightly selfish intentions on this outing – I’ve been wanting to go and see the tanks, planes and guns for a long time now – but it also provided a great excuse for spending time with my younger siblings, and also to help make their school holidays memorable, exciting and (less-importantly) informative.

another festive post

Happy New Years

A belated New Years’ salutation (though who is to say that the earth actually completed and started its solar rotation on the 31st of December/1st of January is beyond me, but the arbitrariness of this holiday is a discussion for a different day…), and welcome to the year 2009.

I hope you all enjoyed your celebrations with great enthusiasm, wrecklessly ignoring the following morning’s consequences and digestive repercussions. I, on the other hand, can safely – and somewhat-regrettably – say that there were no excesses to be enjoyed on my part. This can be blamed partly on my failure to work the previous week, and partly on my failure to change out of shorts before I left home for the night. A lesson has been learned from this experience, however. Read More »

a quick merry update

Merriest of Christmas tidings to all my avid readers (all of which I’m sure I could probably count on one hand)!
Just a quick update and a wish of great, frabjous, holiday achievements. I’m in Canberra at the moment chilling out with friends and family, and I’ve taken quite a few photos. Expect a lengthier and more illustrated (indeed, illustrated at all) post in the coming days and/or weeks.
For now, be safe, slip-slop-slap, and if you’re going to drive, wear a seatbelt and don’t drink! Otherwise, drink to excess.

Feliz Navidad!

Juanta Claus.

If you’re thirsty, wear a tshirt!

Dehydration is a big problem in the summer months, especially with global warming, low water supplies and the fact that everybody drinks soft-drinks in place of water. How is this a corollary to the wearing of short-sleeved garments, I hear you ask. Well, in high-school one of my best friends coined the saying ‘if you’re thirsty, wear a t-shirt. When you go surfing, be sure to wear a t-shirt’. Though it makes little-to-no sense, I thought I’d use it as the title to this post.

This post actually has nothing to do with thirst, but everything to do with me popping my t-shirt-making cherry, so to speak. Last night after finishing up with a work project, I realised that I was faced with three options:

my personal art gallery

Being a nephew or a niece is a big responsibility. Maintaining a relationship with a valuable candy resource is hard enough, but when that resource (in this case, an uncle) lives over 800km away, simple measures like a heartwarming smile become a difficult tool to use.

Thankfully, my siblings have raised very resourceful children – possibly due to the fact that the parents are quite well acquainted with the Australian postal system. Here’s a quick view of the artistic contributions that I have the opportunity to exhibit, thanks to a couple of very creative little tackers. Read More »

Christmas wishlist for my secret santa

ello lublies… Christmas is nearly here again, and with it comes the heartwarming (and pocket-burning – I think there’s something in that… maybe it warms the heart because the fire in the pocket is so hot?) practice of gift-giving.

For those of you who aren’t Ojeda’s or aren’t familiar with the Ojeda family traditions, here’s a quick outline. A few years back we came to the realisation that while we love giving to all our family members, inflation, exchange rates, credit crises (yes, that’s the plural for crisis), consumerism, rising unemployment statistics (though less pertinent in our family), and other evils of the western civilizations, all make it difficult to give what we feel our family members really deserve. To this end, we devised a simple, yet ingenious method through which we could give thoughtfully and generously without feeling the economic sting the morning after.

my new favourite premix

OK, so maybe it’s not AS good as Smirnoff Ice Double-Blacks, but it IS tequila, it IS 2.0 standard drinks in a bottle (as opposed to 1.9 in a bottle and 2.1 in a can) and it IS quite cheap at like $12-15 for a four-pack.

Go forth, drink, and be Mexi.. I mean, Merry.

A Work In Progress – AKA a semestrial journey

Ok so after about 1.35 Bajillion procrastinatings, I’ve finally started knuckling down and making this website worth looking at. This post is basically to kick things off, and to allow me to test out the inner-workings of this site, while I try to get it looking right.

But to make this post worth reading, I’ll fill you in on what I’ve been up to for the past six moons. Bear with me, as this will probably be a long post – 6 months is a lot to cover…
